Carribean Cruises

It's easy to find reasons why more people take cruises to the Carribean than anywhere else in the world. A warm climate; an astounding array of ports of call, each with its own distinctive character and appeal; thousands of beaches, including some of the world's best; great shopping at duty free prices and incredibly clear seas teeming with marine life make this part of the world a perfect cruise vacation destination.

There's much more to this region stretching from South Florida to South America than sun, sand and surf. No other destination presents so many choices of cruise itineraries and lengths, with anything from a two-night getaway to an extended voyage sailing from ports from New York to Central America. In fact, it is so vast and diverse that it really constitutes three separate areas, traditionally defined as Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean.

A typical weeklong cruise allows vacationers to sample these varied cultures, history and peoples at four or five different ports. Each port call opens the door to a new slice of paradise, where you might discover traces of France or Britain or the Netherlands or Spain woven into the distinctive pace and style of the regions many individual nations.

Although a year-round cruise destination, the strong appeal of the Carribean for family cruise vacations make school holiday periods among the busiest times of year. Those looking for the best values in a cruise to the Caribbean should check sailing dates in January, late spring or September through early December.

GENERAL CARIBBEAN INFORMATION

Nowhere in the world are conditions better suited to cruising than in the ever-warm treasure-filled Caribbean Sea. A chain of tropical islands, each vastly different, extend from Cuba in the north to the coast of Venezuela in the south. The colonialists of the past have left their mark, and the presence of the Spanish, French, Dutch, Danish, and British is still felt. English is widely spoken and communication is rarely a problem. The weather in the Caribbean is fairly temperate year- round moderated by the cooling influence of the ever-present trade winds. Temperatures average 78°F - 85°F year-round with the highest humidity in the late summer months. Hurricane season can begin as early as June and last until nearly Thanksgiving but the threat of hurricanes peaks in August and September. The cruise ships always steer clear of these storms, but the associated weather patterns can affect the nearby islands for days. In the summer months, the island flora is at its height, and the water is smoother and clearer.

While currencies vary throughout the islands, U.S. dollars are widely accepted so it is not necessary to exchange money in advance of your visit. Citizens of the U.S. are required to have proof of citizenship, either a valid passport or birth certificate, to travel to the Caribbean. Citizens of other countries should consult with their consulate regarding any required documentation.

The cruise lines position the majority of their ships in the Caribbean from late September through early April. Many ships then leave the Caribbean and sail to Alaska and Europe for the summer season. The best "deals" on Caribbean cruises are to found in the months of September, October, November, and early December, and you'll find excellent Christmas shopping in the duty-free shops of the Caribbean at this time. The most expensive weeks of the year to cruise are the weeks including Christmas and New Year’s, and some ships sell out nine months in advance for these ever-popular dates. There are several cruise lines which maintain ships in the Caribbean during the summer but the selection of ships is greatly reduced from the prime winter months. These summer sailings are popular with honeymooners and families so be sure to make your reservations well in advance for the best rates.

There are generally three different cruise itineraries in the Caribbean; Western Caribbean visiting such ports as Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Key West, and Jamaica; Eastern Caribbean calling on ports like Nassau, San Juan, and St. Thomas; and Southern Caribbean sailing from San Juan to ports such as Aruba, Grenada, Dominica, St. Maarten, St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, or Guadeloupe. The eastern and western itineraries will usually visit 3 ports in seven days, while the busier southern itineraries will visit 4-5 ports in seven days. Longer 10-day itineraries are also available on several cruise lines.

Ships range in size from small (20-30,000 tons and 900- 1100 passengers) to medium (30-60,000 tons and 1200- 1400 passengers) to large (over 70,000 tons carrying over 1800 passengers). Each ship has a unique | personality and style appealing to different types of cruise passengers. We'll help you choose the best one for you.
